C H A P E L   C H A T T E R: Happening in the Chapel
By: Edward “Ned” Vogel, Director of Music, Junior, Connecticut

This semester has been filled with exciting goings-on in our Chapel of Saints Edward and John. From facelifts to concerts, it’s been a busy few months!

Chapel Renovation: During the summer months, the renovation of the Chapel began, bringing the room out of the 1
990s and restoring it to its former glory. We were able to do a lot of wonderful work in the room. Major changes include new hardwood floors, completely restored stained glass and gold leaf, fresh paint, and new light fixtures, as well as an update to the heating and cooling system. The renovation is still going on, though! In the coming weeks, we are expecting new chairs, and a custom-built ambo and music book racks. Still yet, the entire high altar, candlesticks and all, will have their gold left paint refreshed too! When finished, the Chapel will be a beautiful space for Mass and meditation.

New Partnership: In November, Notre Dame’s graduate program in Sacred Music asked to use the chapel for a trial run of one of their new projects, monthly Compline services. Each month, the students in the program plan to visit a different hall chapel on campus and sing Compline, the Liturgy of the Hours’ Night Prayer, for the residents of those halls. We were lucky to be the first hall to experience this service, and it was a memorable and successful endeavor. We welcomed the Sacred Music students back during Advent, when they provided exquisite choral music for one of our Candlelight Masses.

Concert Series: Recently, the Hall established a new cultural outlet for our residents, a concert series of classical and sacred music hosted in the Chapel. Thanks to the great acoustics our new hardwood floors have provided, we now have an amazing venue for concerts featuring vocalists, pianists, and instrumental ensembles made up of Gentlemen in the Hall, as well as talented students in the undergraduate and graduate Music departments. Based on the success of our first concert, this series should prove to be a wonderful addition to the great variety of activities here in St. Edward’s. Stay tuned to hear more about the concert series and other happenings in the Spring installment of Chapel Chatter!
