R E C T O R  T H O U G H T S: For the Kids
By:  Fr. Ralph Haag, CSC, Rector, Nebraska

It’s hard to believe, but this is my tenth year as Rector of St. Edward’s Hall! To mark the occasion, shouldn’t the University mint a special coin, issue a commemorative stamp, or commission a china plate as a keepsake for a dining room hutch? I think so!

When I tell my brother priests that I have been rector for ten years, there are gasps of amazement and disbelief. Still, it’s true I have been at St. Ed’s for ten years!

Does it feel like ten years? Well, yes… particularly on Monday mornings. But seriously, it really doesn’t. If I was pressed to say something, I would say that my tenure feels more like five years, maybe six and half years. Yet, in small and odd ways, I know it has been longer. How? I forget previous residents names. Embarrassing. I forget when people graduated. Not so embarrassing. Stories merge with others and it all becomes a big blur. But that’s to be expected given my age.

Yet, regardless of how long or short it feels, I know why I continue… for the kids! Of course, they’re not “kids.” They’re young adults, but you know what I mean.  And if you don’t understand, well, then I invite you, alumni, family, and friends, to read the
Gentleman’s Monthly Digest and the reflections of the kids. If you do, you’ll understand what a special place St. Edward’s Hall truly is, and also why one, if given the chance, would want to stay!

Please take a gander. After all, it’s all for you… and for the kids!

Carry on,
Fr. Ralph Haag, C.S.C.
Rector, St. Edward’s Hall
